A milestone for Bro
Some milestones arrive as a single headline. This one arrives with a room full of builders, a clear programme ahead, and a reminder of why we started. Bro has been selected for the 2026 Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa — one of 15 South African-led, revenue-generating startups selected from 1,057 applications. We are proud of the selection, but even more interested in the work that comes after it.
From South African roads to a wider room
Bro was built around the realities of how people move in South Africa: the distance between home, work, campus, and opportunity; the pressure of the fare; the long day behind the wheel; and the need for transport to feel more accessible. We have always believed that the people closest to a problem should have a say in how it is solved. Joining this cohort gives that South African point of view a wider room, while keeping our attention on the roads and communities that shaped Bro in the first place.
15 startups. 1,057 applications.
The numbers give the moment some context. Google selected 15 South African-led startups from 1,057 applications for this cohort. The group reflects the breadth of local technology building, with founders working across areas including education, financial services, legal, mobility, health, fashion, and supply chains. Bro is joining as a mobility platform, but we are also joining a wider South African story: people building useful companies for the places they know best.
Building the future of mobility
Google describes Bro as a mobility platform connecting passengers with affordable transport. That description matters to us because mobility is not only about getting from one point to another. It is about whether a person can reach work, make a class, get home safely, or take the next step in their day. The opportunity ahead is to keep learning how technology can support better transport experiences without losing sight of the people who use the road every day.
The questions we want to carry with us
A programme like this is useful when it gives a team better questions, not just more answers. How do we make the rider experience feel simpler at every step? How do we support drivers with tools that respect the pressure of a long shift? How do we keep affordability and safety in the same conversation? These are not questions that belong to a single workshop. They are part of the everyday work of building Bro, and the accelerator gives us a structured space to examine them with fresh eyes.
The work is the point
Selection is worth celebrating, but it is not the product. The product is still the trip a passenger can afford, the driver can complete, and the community can trust. That keeps our perspective grounded. We are entering the programme with things to learn and things to improve, not a finished story. The best outcome would be to come out of the experience clearer about what matters, more rigorous about how we build, and more useful to the people who rely on Bro to move through their day.
A programme built around learning
The accelerator runs over three months and brings the cohort into practical work with Google engineers, mentors, and industry experts. Google describes a programme that combines one-to-one and group learning, sprint projects, technical challenges, and access to relevant technology and resources. For Bro, the value is in the discipline of that process: asking sharper questions, examining the product from different angles, and carrying useful learning back into the work.
Learning alongside South African founders
There is something valuable about being part of a group that is solving different problems in the same country. A founder working in health sees a different kind of friction from a founder working in mobility. A team building for supply chains brings a different perspective from a team building in financial services. The cohort creates space for those perspectives to meet. We are looking forward to listening as much as we are looking forward to sharing what Bro is learning on the road.
A South African story in a wider room
Bro is a South African company working on a problem that touches almost every part of daily life. That context will travel with us into every conversation in the cohort. The roads, payment choices, safety concerns, and economic pressures that shape mobility here are not background details; they are the conditions a useful solution has to understand. We want to contribute that perspective honestly, while staying open to ideas that can help us build with greater care and ambition.
Taking the learning home
The most meaningful part of the opportunity will be what returns with us. Learning has to become clearer decisions, better product thinking, and stronger conversations with the people who use Bro. It has to show up in how we listen to passengers, how we work with drivers, and how we decide what deserves attention next. The cohort gives us a temporary room to focus. The responsibility is to bring the useful parts back into the everyday work of the company.
What comes next
The 2026 cohort begins in September and runs through December, culminating in Demo Day. Between now and then, there is a lot to do: learn, test, build, question, and improve. The programme is a chapter in Bro’s journey, not a finish line. We want to use it to strengthen the thinking behind the product and to keep developing a mobility platform that serves passengers and the people who make the trips possible.
A proud moment — and the work ahead
For Bro, selection is a marker of progress and an invitation to keep earning the next step. We are grateful to be part of the 2026 Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa cohort, proud to represent a South African mobility company, and ready for the work ahead. We will measure the programme by what it helps us do better for passengers, drivers, and South African communities. The future of mobility will be built by people who keep showing up for the details. That is where Bro will be.

More than rides.

South Africa needed a ride platform that puts people first. So we built Bro.
We pull up on campuses, ride alongside drivers, listen to riders, and build in the open. A better way to move, made here.
Booking a trip, earning from one, or rolling with Bro SCLR: you're part of what we're building.
